What Are the Causes of Impotence?

Impotence is defined as a condition where a person is unable to achieve or retain an erection. Impotence can be a serious or a mild problem. An impotence problem can be a limiting factor in the life of a male. It is often considered as a sexual hindrance, because it can significantly affect one's sex life. Impotence can affect men of all ages and this problem can be treated.

Impotence can have many different defined forms. A man suffering from impotence may lose his erection before he desired, which is technically defined as impotence. Another man may not achieve or retain an erection, and this too is technically defined as impotence. However, a man who experiences erectile dysfunctions also can have this condition. A normal erection is caused by the blood rushing into the penis, and a man with impotence may have inadequate blood supply to his penis.

Impotence can have many causes. There are several risk factors for impotence, which can increase the risk of losing or even maintaining an erection. One of the risk factors for impotence is low libido. If a man has a low libido, then he may not be able to perform to his potential because of the lack of sexual interest. Libido affects a man's sex drive and is related to many aspects of a man's psychology. When a man lacks interest in sex, then he may not have the same level of interest in foreplay and can thus experience difficulties with achieving or maintaining an erection.

Another risk factor for impotence is poor circulation in the sex organs. Poor circulation causes vessels to shrink, allowing blood to leak into the sex organs and causing them to become damaged. The most common of these is a poor erection. Some men have enlarged vessels, which can lead to a lack of blood flow to the organ that causes impotence, in addition to other psychological causes. This is one of the more common causes of impotence, and it can be treated with medication.

Stress is also a factor that leads to impotence and can cause both physical and psychological problems. For some men, being under too much stress can lead to other physical and psychological problems as well. Anxiety causes the body to tense up, and to a certain degree this makes the problem worse than it would be otherwise. In some ways, dealing with anxiety helps to solve the causes of impotence; however, medications like antidepressants are not available for treating anxiety, so these treatments must be used in moderation.

Other physical and mental health issues that are linked to impotence are diabetes and heart disease. Both of these can cause low testosterone levels, a main cause of lowered libido. If a man has either of these diseases he may experience low libido or even experience complete erectile failure. While there is no sure cure for either of these conditions, the sufferer can still take medications that will help control their levels; these medications can also be used to treat the anxiety that is a part of impotence as well.
